Why be Unionized

Why Unions Are Important

“Every person is free to join a union of his (or her) own choice and to participate in its lawful activities.”
— Canadian Labour Law

Through representation, the BC Floorlayers Union Local 1541 provides flooring installers a voice for fairness and equality in the workplace, and gives workers the power to negotiate for more favourable working conditions and other benefits through collective bargaining.

The Floorlayers Union members work with a collective agreement that delivers fairness in the workplace, the highest wages in the industry, extended health and welfare and MSP coverage along with pension contributions for income replacement so members can retire with dignity and security.

Unionization prevents employers, especially employers of low-wage workers, from ignoring labour and payment laws. Throughout history unions have striven to haven an 8-hour workday along with vacation/holiday pay. When installers are needed to work beyond 8 hours-a-day or during a statutory holiday, they are compensated.
